Did you have monsters in your room?
You know, the real-life monsters, the ones worse than any Disney movies, the ones that made books and movies feel like a joke because these types of monsters are the ones that live with you forever.
They leave so many bruises, so much darkness, so much despair, and so much sorrow that it haunts you forever. You can’t seem to wash them off you, and they won’t disappear from your mind. The smell comes in often, and flashes of those experiences still occur in your mind.
The persistent feeling of shame and guilt makes you unable to speak about it. You ask yourself, “Could I have done something to stop this from happening to me? Why me?”
This type of trauma has bruises you only see, the scars you only feel. These monsters make sleeping hard at night even after they are physically gone.
Yours was not a fairytale upbringing.
You’ve heard others talk about their childhood – filled with joy, smiles, and maybe some argument but nothing like yours.
You didn’t grow up in a warm atmosphere. Maybe you even wondered if you were ever truly loved. Was the physical abuse so violent from your parents, or was the endless name-calling making you feel worthless? Like you were not ever good enough.
Did you feel alone, empty, or have thoughts of ending it all? You’ve had to be your parent and raise yourself in some parts or even all of your life. Somehow you made it this far. That doesn’t surprise me because you are resilient!
Let’s make those monsters less scary.
Traumatic events from the past can influence us later on, causing flashbacks and keeping us in a depressed state. As a result, we cannot move forward and have normal relationships while living in fear that something will happen again.
I have training in EMDR therapy, a proven treatment for those experiencing trauma. EMDR helps you work through those emotions triggered by past traumatic events, thus allowing you to move past the event and focus more on positive thoughts.
